I maintain a list of independent states and their territories in another place (OK, so I'm weird) and the following is just an export from it into HTML. The list is accurate as at September 1997 I think - if you know different please let me know. There are 239 of them of which the independent states number 193 (and rising each decade).
List of Independent States and Territories
Bea and I have travelled round the world for a year and prefer to visit non-Western countries for holidays when possible. To see some pictures from our travels see my Photo Travelogue. This happens to be true of many of our friends too and one day, over a rather tasty Chinese meal in Camden, this led to the proposal of a formal report to see who was the most travelled person amongst us. Since I'm a mug, I was charged with setting up the rules and a repository for the recording of people's travel exploits.
For friends and aquaintances, to record your travelogue, just email me your list of visited countries. I would suggest taking a copy of the list of states and territories above, deleting all the ones you haven't visited and then sending me the result. I'll do the rest.
This idle pastime was intended to be for friends and aquaintances of mine. Much to my surprise, a number of random people have also written to me and sent in their lists of countries expecting me to add their lists. Unfortunately, my time is very limited and much as I would like to spend hours cutting, pasting and counting lists for people I don't know, it's just not feasible, I'm afraid. As a compromise, I have created a page of links to such people. If you are desperate for your list of countries to be published, send me the link to a page of yours and I'll shove it in.
